The Makeup Trick Behind Kendall Jenner’s Fuller-Looking Lips

If you've ever wondered how Kendall Jenner manages to achieve those perfectly defined, naturally fuller-looking lips without making them look overly drawn or exaggerated, the secret lies in her lip liner technique.
The supermodel and her longtime makeup artist, Mary Phillips, don’t rely on dramatic overlining or bold colours. Insteas, Phillips has mastered a subtle combination of contouring, layering and carefully chosen nude shades that creates the illusion of naturally plumper lips on Jenner.
The look was recently on display at the Academy Museum Gala, where Kendall wore her signature understated makeup: a flawless complexion, softly bronzed cheekbones and a nude lip that looked both effortless and perfectly sculpted. It's the kind of beauty look that doesn't immediately reveal how much technique goes into achieving it, which is precisely what makes it so appealing.
So, what's the trick?
The secret is to overline only the centre of your lips, rather than tracing beyond your natural lip shape all the way around. Mary Phillips slightly extends the natural lip line along the centre of both the upper and lower lips, following the actual contours at the corners. This creates the illusion of extra volume while keeping the overall result soft and believable.

The choice of lip liner is just as important. A slightly cool-toned nude pencil creates a subtle shadow around the mouth, mimicking the natural depth and definition of fuller lips. Once the outline is in place, the centre is filled with a warmer, creamier nude shade. The contrast between the two tones gives the lips dimension instead of leaving them looking flat.
The golden rule to remember
You don't need a complicated lip routine to recreate Kendall's signature pout. The trick is to choose a lip liner approximately half a shade darker than your lipstick or gloss, preferably in a cooler nude tone. Define the centre of the lips just beyond their natural line, keep the corners close to their original shape, then blend a lighter, warmer shade towards the centre.
