Should You Be Storing Your Beauty Products in the Refrigerator?

Putting your beauty products in the fridge has many advantages. Among those advantages are: better conservation, efficiency, and increased benefits. Therefore they will fulfill all their intents and purposes... The benefits of refrigeration are so much praised that we can see some mini refrigerators made especially for beauty products. So, are they essential?

Keeping your beauty products in the fridge is a concept that we hear about from a generation to another, without really knowing its benefits. Do you really have to keep your beauty products in the fridge? Some people actually see it as a necessity and even invest their money in the so-called beauty fridges. However, we are exploring whether the huge benefits of cold on our cosmetics are a myth or a reality, before being tempted by this novelty.

Better Conservation

Like food, beauty products have an expiration date. We often use them for months or even after the expiry date ... That's a mistake. Once a body or face cream is opened, it can usually be used for six to twelve months. And you can just look under the packaging: the icon is an open jar, with a number followed by an M (a mandatory mention).

Face skincare products should be stored in a cool, dry place, while they are usually stored in the bathroom, which is the wettest room in the house. And some products are stored much better in the fridge, like nail polish. This also works for "fresh" cosmetics, based on natural ingredients such as the ones we buy from Lush, which specify their storage conditions in their instructions. The same goes for homemade products which might lose some of their benefits at room temperature.

Better Efficiency

Some products see their efficiency increased tenfold when refrigerated. This is particularly the case with eye cream: the cold amplifies the decongestant and tightening effects to perfectly fight fine lines and puffiness. Antioxidant or hydrating mists and floral waters used to soothe or refresh the face are also more effective (and more pleasant) when kept cool. And skincare creams can also keep their properties longer when stored in the fridge.

Certain molecules, such as retinol, plant extracts, vitamins A and C, have difficulty withstanding temperature variations. The action of their active ingredients is optimized if they are kept in the refrigerator. Be careful, however: once stored in a cool place, the products must stay there, so as not to break the cold chain. This might alter their formula.

Beauty Fridges Trend

Many beauty products work better if stored in the refrigerator, and have the advantage of being more effective. In theory, that's fine, but in practice, how does it work? Putting your beauty products in the refrigerator is not the most practical, because it depends on the size of your fridge, with whom and whether you’re able to place them between the foods. Hopping on this trend (and on the idea that everything small is cute), beauty fridges are popping everywhere recently, including our Instagram feeds. So, did you buy your own cute pink beauty fridge?
