The Biggest Fall Hair Colors for 2020

Summer has come to an end which makes it the perfect timing for some changes to switch to Fall vibes. Hair color is as important as your wardrobe changes, so wash the summer blond away, and get ready for some coppery tones in addition to some daring colors.

We have never talked so much about hair color like in the recent months, but during the quarantine period, we had to learn to live without the expert hands of our hairdressers, and that has changed habits.

“Women have not necessarily changed colors but they have had to make choices” explains hairdresser Christophe-Nicolas Biot, Wella ambassador.

“Either they have decided to take care of it themselves at home, or they have just learned to embrace grown-out roots. A good opportunity to reconnect with their original color, or to come to terms with white hair. This period really allowed them to rediscover their natural selves”.

Natural and Neutral Tones

Anyway, summer is over. Many have rediscovered their seasonal habits, maybe some highlights or a sun-kissed effect. Autumn is often synonymous with warm and reassuring tones. “This year, unlike last winter when the trend was for very cold tones, we are going to focus on more natural tones. A sun-warmed brown will fall back to a neutral brown rather than too cold. The idea is to counteract the hot effects” explains the expert.

Here are some ideas for Fall 2020 hair colorations

Instagram trends

When it comes to hair trends, social media can be a good indicator. Instagram can bring out new colors or new concepts. Among the most popular hashtags, we will retain the #copperhair, a copper sweep but subtle for a natural effect. The copper hair is suitable for all skin tones and is a good pass to those who want to switch for red but smoothly. Young actress Zendaya opted for this color last year and it was a hit.

Interviewed this summer, colorist Stéphane Pous also noted the return of colors that haven’t been seen for ten years, like red. “We were turning around red as we tried many of its tones, so the return to red is a logical consequence. And in opposition to black, it can be very beautiful” adds Christophe-Nicolas Biot. The latest celebrities to have tried this color are both Dua Lipa and Kim Kardashian.

A touch of originality

Pastel colors like lilac, candy pink, sea green and others have also been trending. Kaia Gerber tried the candy pink live on Instagram. Check it out.

A very transitory effect? “We used to think that this rainbow trend was going to fade, but in fact, I think it will continue. Of course, it is aimed at a specific customer segment, and it is more girls between the ages of 15 and 25 who dare the experience. A few years ago, they used hydrogen peroxide in their bathrooms. Today, the proposals of hair brands are proving to be much more surprising and fun”. And the hairdresser adds that these lilac or pink effects are perfect for a light look in autumn.

For a Less Monotonous Fall

Wella has developed a whole new range of coloring masks “Color Fresh” to enjoy transforming your hair color at home. Temporary products are named “Lilac Frost, Copper Glow…” to neutralize warm tones, revive a color or temporarily transform it.

In the salon, experts opt for the illumination technique: “It allows you to find less marked contrasts and shadows. We keep a real effect of nuances, but in softer and less distinct ways”.

And for those who hesitate to change the hair color radically but still want a touch of originality? "We can start with a colored lock: a strong touch that illuminates”. This detail was seen in Dolce & Gabbana fall-winter 2020-2021.

Last alternative? The “Skunk hair”, or very contrasting blonde locks, in line with the rogue hair trend that only concerns the locks that frame the face. Both are part of a very nineties spirit. A two-tone effect very popular with some celebrities like Billie Eilish.

Whether you opt for classic details or more daring ones, and whether you choose a long-lasting or more ephemeral technique, and finally whether you entrust your lengths to your hairdresser or prefer to start at home, the choices are endless this season.
