Capsule Dressing: Create 1,000 Outfits with Just 9 Essential Fashion Items

Every fall, the cycle repeats: one day, we crave oversized sweaters; the next, we impulsively buy clothes unsuitable for the season, leading to wardrobe overflow and the feeling of having nothing to wear. Fashion influencer Alice, 28, shares her solution: “capsule dressing,” a Marie Kondo-inspired technique.
The concept is simple. Instead of buying new pieces each season, select 9 items from your wardrobe—three neutral tops, three pairs of shoes in sober shades and three bottoms such as a baggy jeans, one of this season's must-haves. This method demonstrates how to combine these pieces to create multiple looks. For example, a blue shirt pairs perfectly with a gray skirt, while the same skirt looks great with an ecru turtleneck. Alice proves that with just nine pieces, you can create over twenty outfits, sufficient to last until winter's end.

These combinations serve as basics but can be enhanced with coats, bags, and accessories, allowing for endless choices.
What about colors and patterns?
This strategy thrives on versatile basics—plain clothes with simple cuts, like a white t-shirt or gray cardigan. But can it accommodate a more eclectic style? “Prints can be included in the capsule wardrobe. Opt for timeless prints like stripes or polka dots,” says Alice. “Even leopard print can work if it’s a classic piece.”
“Capsule dressing” promotes smart choices, personal style, and the ability to dress thoughtfully.
