Between corporate codes and self-expression, how do you choose the right shade—one that enhances your look without ever compromising it? Three experts share their advice on balancing elegance, professionalism and creativity, right down to your fingertips.

In the professional world, nails can be a subtle messenger: they convey discipline, creativity, control or even a sense of personal freedom. “Someone’s competence has nothing to do with the color of their nail polish,” says Alexandra Falba, an expert manicurist at OPI. “But in certain environments, nails that are too long or too bold can still be perceived as overly whimsical or even undermine credibility.”

On the other hand, in client-facing roles, well-groomed hands can be a real asset. “In some offices, there’s an expectation of impeccable hands—a discreet, polished manicure that reflects seriousness and control,” she adds. “Well-maintained hands already send a message: ‘I take care of myself, so I can also take care of my work and others.’”

At Gloss’Up nail bars in Paris and Marseille—where working women make up the majority of the clientele—“there are as many nail art enthusiasts as there are loyal fans of their signature shade,” notes Olivia Keusters, founder and CEO. She confirms: “Above all, what matters to them is having a neat, well-executed manicure.”

The same observation comes from Ginger Paris, in the 16th arrondissement, where founder Julia Melkonova welcomes business leaders, public figures, and busy mothers. “My clients want to look impeccable, chic and feminine. A perfect manicure inspires confidence and gives them an extra boost of self-assurance.”

A Wardrobe of Timeless Shades

To avoid any mismatch, Alexandra Falba recommends opting for a sheer nude finish that lets the natural nail show through—think “soap nails.” “You’re not creating contrast; you’re simply playing with transparency. It’s subtle and foolproof.” According to all three experts, it’s also the safest choice for a job interview, allowing your words—not the details—to take center stage.

For those who prefer an opaque finish, choosing the right nude depends on your skin tone: “Look at the color of your veins,” explains the OPI expert. “If they appear purple, you have cool undertones—go for pink-toned nudes. If they look green, opt for beige or peachy shades. And if you see a mix of both, you can pull off anything.”

Another timeless option: red, in all its variations—from bright carmine to deep burgundy. “You can never go wrong with red. There’s a wide tolerance for red tones—they don’t raise eyebrows, as long as the nails are kept fairly short,” she says. “You should choose it like you would a lipstick—based on your skin tone, but also the shape and length of your nails,” adds Julia Melkonova.

Embracing Color—The Right Way

Good news for those looking to break free from the rules: more expressive shades are now finding their place in professional settings. “Grays—from light to taupe or lavender—chocolate browns, caramel tones…” lists Alexandra Falba.

Her tip for wearing color without drawing too much attention? Opt for darker shades. “Forest green, deep plum, navy blue… They’re strong colors, but they’re perceived as elegant and understated. From a distance, they look refined—it’s only up close that you notice the nuance.” Even black, whether matte or glossy, has become more widely accepted.

As for finishes, creativity is finding its balance. “Nails have become a true fashion accessory,” observes Olivia Keusters. “Today, we change our manicure like we change our handbag.” Subtle effects—like ombré “Baby Boomer” styles or chrome finishes inspired by Hailey Bieber—remain elegant choices. For those wanting to refresh a classic, the French manicure is making a strong comeback, now reimagined in an ultra-fine version.

Alexandra Falba concludes on an optimistic note: “Over the past fifteen years, the color palette has really opened up—and today, offices are becoming more colorful. We’re seeing pinks, oranges, lilacs and bold choices.”
