Since bursting on the scene, TikTok brought us countless smart and clever beauty tricks and the latest of them is the Korean skincare trend known as “Slugging”, the one that piqued the attention of skincare brands and dermatologists.
So let’s discover the trend and its benefits.
Slugging originated in South Korea and is just a one-step and one-product type of hack. It involves covering the whole face with a thin layer of Vaseline or petroleum-based balm after your night skincare routine, to lock in moisture and seal in your skin-care products.
Then, the next morning, you wash it off with your face cleanser and enjoy your newly hydrated, glowing skin.
According to specialists, slugging is especially recommended during the winter months, when cold weather and central heating zap skin of moisture and plumpness.
Dr Adil Sarwar, aesthetic doctor and founder of Skin Science Clinic told Popsugar that he strongly advises against slugging if you have oily or combination skin. "Adding a greasy substance like petroleum jelly to already oily skin would give an even shinier appearance to the face and would likely lead to the onset of spots, redness and enlarged pores”.

And when asked about whether slugging is bad or not for the skin, Dr. Sarwar said that "While slugging may give the short-term gratification of softened skin, I suspect that pores would become clogged over time, and the skin would lose moisture in the long term if only petroleum jelly is used to provide hydration”.
While we are so sure that the use of a moisturizer is a must, there’s no harm in trying out this skincare hack every now and then for a shiny skin the next morning.
