The slim jeans are still in style and here is the proof

Mom jeans, straight-cut jeans, slouchy, high-waist and other denim pants did not actually replace the slim jeans. Unlike what everyone is thinking, the slim jeans are still here; keep scrolling if you want some pieces of evidence. Whether we like these jeans or not (or we might even have no opinion on this), they have been in our wardrobe for the last 20 years and their reign is far from over.

According to a recent study by Retviews (a competitive analysis tool that provides data on fashion brands), slim jeans are selling well in 2020, especially at Mango, H&M and Pull & Bear. This study also shows that the selling price of slim jeans is, on average, more affordable than that of its main competitor: mom jeans (wide pants from the 1990s, characterized by their wide cut from the hips to the ankles).

The slim jeans are somehow “seductive”

Why are these jeans resistant to trends and time?  It seems that skinny jeans lover consider them a wardrobe basic. "I always have a pair of high-waist slim jeans in my closet. I like to wear them when I'm in a kind of rock mood, and they go well with everything" says Candice. For some, it is also a way to enhance the silhouette. “There is a seductive side to skinny jeans. Men like them, they find them more flattering for the silhouette than the 80-style jeans, which show less shapes” explains Marion. “I'm petite so loose jeans tend to make me look even smaller. I always wear the high-waist slim, it’s the piece you put on when you don't know what to wear” adds Clémence.

But finding the right slim jeans is not as easy as you think. "The right-cut jeans stop at the ankles" Says Sabrina. “It is a little detail but it's exactly what makes the jeans flatter or not the figure. And unfortunately, usually longer lengths are found in shops” she adds. Finally, wearing slim jeans is also a safe bet that guarantees a good look in case no other ideas popped in our minds. “It goes well with all shoes. And if I wanted to attend a party but without grabbing attention, the slim jeans are all it takes to pull a simple night outfit”. “They're also pants with which you can play with volumes, you can wear them with grungy boots or with oversized knit sweaters” explains Sabrina.

A garment that has a long history

First adopted by the English punk-rock world in the 1970s, the slim jeans shocked by the way they hugged the thighs and legs. The denim cut was quickly adopted by the Rolling Stones, transforming this piece into an androgynous wardrobe staple.

The slim jeans, deeply rooted in the Rock'n'Roll world, remained unwanted in the 80’s and 90’s ready-to-wear collections, which continued to offer straight-leg cuts. And nothing will give an idea on these cuts better than the cinema of that time: La Boum (1980), Pretty Woman (1990), or Friends (1994): here, the shoulders are broad and square, the clothes are oversized, and the pants drool over the shoes.

We had to wait until Hedi Slimane arrived at Dior Homme in 2000 for things to change. The designer's idea: to radically change the men's wardrobe by offering them a new fashion. Skinny jeans, cropped jackets and ties are reintroduced. The silhouette is tall and thin. A success that pushed Karl Lagerfeld to lose weight so that he could fit into the designer's skinny jeans, and which ultimately won over ready-to-wear and street style. The slim jeans reached their peak in popularity when Kate Moss was spotted wearing them. The model has even made them her signature: teaming them with leather boots sometimes, and with pumps other times.
