Everything We know About Lady Diana’s Statue So Far

July 1 marks Lady Diana’s birthday and Kensington Palace celebrated the Princess of Wales’ supposed-to-be 60 years old birthday in a very special way.

On Thursday, the two brothers, Duke of Cambridge Prince William and Duke of Sussex Prince Harry reunited in tribute of their mother and left all their problems behind to attend a scaled-down ceremony at Kensington palace. They unveiled the long-awaited statue of Diana.

William and Harry made no speeches during the ceremony. In a brief joint statement, released after the unveiling, they said: “Today, on what would have been our mother’s 60th birthday, we remember her love, strength and character – qualities that made her a force for good around the world, changing countless lives for the better.

“Every day, we wish she were still with us, and our hope is that this statue will be seen forever as a symbol of her life and her legacy.”

It was planned in February 2017

The two brothers decided to commission the statue back in 2017 and it was set to be unveiled the same year, then it was delayed until August 2020, and then until the first of July 2021. They decided to commission it marking the twentieth anniversary of their mother’s death.

The Sculptor is famous in the field

The sculptor is Ian Rank-Brodley, the same sculptor who designed the image of the Queen that is used on the UK’s coins. Both William and Harry have worked closely with Ian on the project as he took the challenging role put his soul into it. The result? A beautiful statue just like Lady Diana.

Who are the three children in the statue?

Everyone had this question in mind once the statue was revealed. Sources tell that the three kids are there to honor Diana’s character and that their presence is to pay homage to “Princess Diana's special ability to bond with people, particularly young ones”.
